Fenian Bitch (2025) is a letterpress printed book of narrative poems that explores the unspoken, unacknowledged and repressed memories of Irish culture. Oftentimes the most difficult to digest memories are pushed away, because of trauma, guilt, or shame. For Ireland, our people have a unique mix of colonial violence, a culture of rebellion, and a resilient indigenous culture.
In my own family, there are aspects of my history that have been deliberately hidden from me due to shame and colonial guilt. Involvement in armed resistance, and traumatic experiences with the church, for example, are left unspoken. Fenian Bitch developed around this, using abstraction and unconventional narrative devices to mirror the feeling of clouded, obscured or forgotten memories.
Fenian Bitch was hand typeset and printed on a Vandercook Universal III, over the course of four months. Throughout the work are hand-carved linoleum prints of cultural images and icons.
